I’ve been reading lots of savings advises online, some are
weird, most are common advises that we get from our family and friends. But how often do you heed someone's advice? Oftentimes, none.
I remember writing down notes from one article entitled ‘The 100 Ultimate Money Saving Tips’ (sorry forgot to note the author) and surprisingly, after 2 year when I revisited my notes, I was able to check almost 80% of what’s on the list. My favorite tips are listed randomly as follows:
- Determine your wants and needs.
- Account for everything.
- Commit to your fund allocation.
- Work from home if possible.
- Maximize free movies and software.
- Don’t miss payment on bills.
- Avoid the mall.
- Buy in bulk when possible.
- Stop ordering takeout.
- Cut down on expensive coffee.
- Schedule your essential purchases.
- Repair instead of throwing things out when possible.
- Ignore the need for brands.
- Avoid vices.
- Avoid eating junk food.
- Make a list before you go shopping.
- Look at long-term goals.
- Stop being on trend all the time.
- Read personal finance books.
- Have a ‘fun fund’
- Have an emergency fund.
- Plan your travel ahead.
- Double down on debt; it stops having to pay more on interest.
- Consider a low-cost investment to shore up savings e.g. shopping for insurance policies.
- Plan and limit gift giving.
- Use what you have.
- Assess everything for quality as well as price.
- Take the cost of your impulse buy and divide it into your hourly wage.
- Take on savings challenge.
- Read personal finance books.
It takes time to develop a habit. You can have your own set of list. But a list will always be a paper if you don’t commit to it. Start the change and give your all. Have fun.
